My Health Record

My Health Record lets Australians share a summary of their health information with registered healthcare providers — improving care coordination, reducing duplication, and supporting better clinical decisions.

Why use My Health Record?

For providers, it means you can:

  • Access up-to-date medication, allergy and immunisation information at the point of care

  • Avoid duplicate tests and diagnostic imaging

  • Support continuity of care across services and settings, including end-of-life care

  • Verify and validate clinical information from other treating practitioners

For consumers, it means:

  • Their health information travels with them across providers

  • Risk of adverse medication events is reduced

  • They don't need to repeat their history at every appointment

  • Their care is better coordinated, even in emergencies

Examples of how allied health professionals may use My Health Record

My Health Record is particularly useful when you need a fuller picture of a client's health history. Common use cases include:

  • Reviewing hospital discharge summaries before starting rehabilitation

  • Checking current medications or allergies that may influence your treatment approach

  • Understanding recent diagnoses or hospital events that affect care planning

  • Supporting clients managing complex or chronic conditions across multiple providers

  • Helping clients understand what's in their own record and how to use it

How allied health professionals access My Health Record

There are two ways to access My Health Record. The right option for you depends on your current software setup.

1. National Provider Portal

The Portal is a browser-based viewer available to all registered providers — no additional software required.

What you can do:

  • View information entered by other providers

Limitations to be aware of:

  • You cannot upload or enter information into the record

  • The Portal runs in a separate browser from your other clinical tools

  • It requires a separate login from your usual clinical information system (CIS)

  • Any information you want to save must be manually downloaded and entered into your own system

Best for: Practitioners who want to start viewing records immediately while their software becomes conformant.

2. Conformant Clinical Information System (CIS)

A conformant CIS is practice management or clinical software that has been approved to connect directly to My Health Record.

What you can do:

  • View and upload information to the record

  • Access My Health Record from within your existing software — no separate login or browser needed

  • Automatically incorporate accessed information into your client's record in your CIS

Best for: Practitioners who want a fully integrated workflow and the ability to contribute to a client's record.

Not on the list?

Ask your software vendor when they plan to become conformant. A number of vendors are in the process — see the expanded allied health investment announcement for more detail. If your vendor has no plans to conform, you may need to consider switching systems to be able to upload records in future.
