Media Statement: AHPA supports DVA system integrity and access to allied health care for veterans
Allied Health Professions Australia (AHPA) condemns the exploitation of veterans and is deeply concerned by the practices reported in ABC’s Four Corners investigation.
AHPA welcomes Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh’s comments and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ commitment to protecting veterans, strengthening accountability and safeguarding access to allied healthcare.
AHPA Chief Executive Officer Bronwyn Morris-Donovan said ensuring the integrity of the DVA scheme and access to clinically appropriate care is vital.
“We welcome the Minister’s recognition that the vast majority of health providers, advocates and people supporting our veteran community do the right thing.
“Allied health professionals make an essential contribution to veterans’ care, helping them manage complex conditions, regain independence and improve their quality of life.
“Exploitation of veterans is grossly unacceptable, and funding intended for their care must support services that meet their clinical needs and deliver meaningful health outcomes.
“We support targeted measures by DVA and the Australian Government to address inappropriate billing and exploitation while protecting access to necessary care.
“AHPA is committed to working constructively with government, DVA and our member peak bodies to strengthen integrity, support high-quality practice and ensure veterans receive the right care from the right allied health professionals.”
