Telehealth

Telehealth can significantly improve access for consumers who may otherwise have difficulties seeing their healthcare provider by:

  • reducing the waiting time to see a health professional

  • avoiding the need to travel to see a health professional

  • maintaining continuity of care when consumers are unable to visit their healthcare service in person.

Delivering care via telehealth needs careful consideration prior to use in relation to factors such as:

  • Developing methods of delivery that protect patients and ensure care is still delivered in a safe and effective manner

  • Technical aspects of telehealth

  • Professional standards

  • Differences with face-to-face consultations.

The resources on this page will assist you to begin considering how you will address these factors relevant to your practice setting. You should also explore resources from your professional association on this topic.

AHPA has produced a guide and several associated resources addressing technical, privacy and security, and clinical assessment aspects of telehealth for allied health professionals. These resources are intended to provide an overall introduction to telehealth and are to be used in conjunction with profession-specific guidance developed by individual professions.
