About
Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is the government-recognised peak body for the music therapy profession in Australia, representing over 1,000 members. Music therapy is an evidence-based practice and allied health profession. In music therapy, registered music therapists (RMTs) use music therapeutically to support people to improve their health, functioning and wellbeing. AMTA promotes and advocates for the music therapy profession by lobbying to increase consumer access to music therapy services.
Vision
People and communities across Australia have equitable access to safe and effective music therapy delivered by registered music therapists.
AMTA is committed to supporting members and the profession by enabling, advancing and advocating for access to and excellence in music therapy.
AMTA works continuously to:
promote and advocate for the music profession
reduce barriers to access to music therapy services.
Advocacy
Music therapy is an evidence-based practice and allied health profession that results in wide-ranging and positive outcomes across the lifespan. AMTA advances the music therapy profession by advocating for equitable access for services and supporting RMTs to deliver safe and high-quality music therapy. AMTA is determined to increase our reach and improve access to music therapy.
We engage nationally with policymakers, key decision makers, Members of Parliament and Senators and other stakeholders to influence policy development, regulation, legislation and program design to ensure music therapy is recognised, accessible and appropriately funded.
Regulation / Accreditation
Music therapy in Australia is a self-regulated profession, with AMTA as the certifying body. AMTA is a member of the National Alliance of Self-Regulating Health Professions.
Registered music therapists have completed an AMTA-accredited bachelor or masters degree in music therapy. To maintain their registration, RMTs must meet AMTA requirements that include continuing professional development and adhering to AMTA’s code of ethics and professional standards.
Registration through AMTA is required for music therapists to deliver services in various state and Commonwealth-funded programs including the National Disability Insurance Scheme and aged care funding schemes.
